- Cursor (flashing symbol on screen) shows where you are in your text.
- Change cursor position with these keys:
-
- Four arrow keys (on right side) move once in direction shown.
- Shift with arrows moves to edge of screen (PCjr: shift and Fn).
- Ctrl with left and right arrows moves a word at a time.
-
- Home key moves cursor to left margin, End key to after text on line,
- Shift with Home to start of text on line; Shift with End to right margin.
- Ctrl with Home sets "bookmark", Ctrl with End jumps to "bookmark".
-
- PgUp and PgDn keys scroll one line (PCjr: Fn with up/down arrow).
- Shift with PgUp and PgDn scrolls whole screen (PCjr: Shift, no Fn).
- Ctrl with PgUp and PgDn move one paragraph (PCjr: Shift, Ctrl, no Fn).
-
- Shift Grey+ (or Alt +) moves to start of text; Shift Grey- (or Alt -) to end.
- Tab key moves to next tab stop; Shift Tab to previous one.
-
- Alt F9 key (or Alt 9) shows cursor line number in file, column number, line and
- page number when printed. To change one of these, use F7, F8, F9 and F10 to
- select number to change, type new number, and press Enter.
- Simple editing changes a character at a time. Typing character either inserts
- pushing text right (Pushright mode) or replaces old characters (Overwrite
- mode). Scroll Lock (PCjr: Fn S) switches mode. Top line says Push or Over,
- cursor changes size. Num Lock makes right-hand digit keys enter digits.
- Enter any character code by holding Alt and typing code on this keypad.
-
- Enter key starts new line (or breaks line in two). Or just type text and at
- right margin word you're typing is moved down (wordwrap). Either inserts a
- "line boundary" character, which Del, Bksp, etc. can delete.
-
- To delete characters and go backwards, press Bksp (back arrow on top row); to
- delete ones at cursor and go forward, press Del. To insert space but not
- move cursor, press Ins; use Ins / Del to slide line back and forth. After
- sliding a line with Ins or Del, move down and press Shift with Ins or Del
- to slide many lines by same amount.
-
- To delete word and go backwards, press Ctrl Bksp; to delete word at cursor and
- go forwards, press Ctrl Esc. To delete from cursor to end of line, press
- Ctrl Enter; at start of line this deletes line.
- To recover deleted word or line, press Esc.
-
- To delete block of text use F4. Press F4 at one end of block to delete.
- Move cursor and you are MARKING text. After marking block to delete,
- press F4 at other end to delete it. Deleted text is moved to hold area.
- Press Esc to un-delete (insert hold).
-
- To copy block of text, use F3. Press F3 at one end of block to copy.
- You are MARKING again. After marking block to copy, press F3 at other end.
- This makes block MARKED. Move cursor to place to copy. Press F3 to copy it.
- Block is still marked; press F3 to make another copy or F5 to unmark it.
- To move block of text, use F6. Just like copy, press F6 at each end of block
- to move, go to new location, press F6 to move it. Finally press F6 to move
- it somewhere else or F5 to unmark it.
-
- To copy block of text to file, press Ctrl F6 (or Alt 6) at each end of block.
- After entering file name, if file exists you can cancel copy, make text
- replace file, or append text to end of file.
- To insert file at cursor, press Ctrl F3 (Alt 3). Ctrl F4 is same as Esc.
-
- Moving cursor does not change marked, only marking. Marked/marking text looks
- different, and top line says "Marking" or "MARKED". To mark entire text,
- press Ctrl F5. Shift Ins/Del and Reformat (F7) apply to marked/marking text.
- Grey+ key, on right (PCjr: Fn with +) searches for next occurrence of some
- text, and Grey- key (PCjr: Fn with -) for previous occurrence.
-
- F9 sets text to search for or replace. Cursor is on top line; enter "Find"
- text or press F10 and enter "Replace" text. When entering "Replace", press
- F9 to enter "Find" text again. After entering text, press Enter to resume
- editing, or Grey+ (Grey-) to immediately search forward (backward).
- During search small letters match capitals but capitals only match themselves.
- In "Find" or "Replace" text, some keys match in special ways:
- F3 copies marked area
- F4 copies hold area
- F5 matches any letter or digit
- F6 matches any other character ("F6theF6" does not match "other")
- F7 matches any character
- F8 matches line boundary
-
- Press F10 to replace "Find" text with "Replace" text. First search with
- Grey+ or Grey-; replace with F10 if appropriate. Or, just press F10 to
- search for next occurrence and replace it in one operation.
- Alt F10 (Alt 0) will search and replace continuously from cursor to end, or
- un-replace last replacement. During continuous replacement, you can cancel.
- Press F1 to operate on file being edited and see Help pages.
-
- If you have changed current text since you read it into memory it must be
- saved by writing it back to disk or changes will be lost.
-
- F1 then F1 or F1 then Enter just continues editing after refering to Help.
-
- F1 then F2 saves text if you changed it, then exits back to computer DOS.
-
- F1 then F3 saves text by writing it to disk, whether or not it was changed.
-
- F1 then F4 saves text if it was changed, then tries to start another "shell"
- of DOS. If successful you can do DOS commands such as DIR, RENAME, DELETE,
- FORMAT, or run other programs while PC-Write and your text are in memory.
- ALWAYS use DOS command EXIT to resume PC-Write where you left off.
-
- F1 then F5 lets you change file name of text being edited (without saving).
-
- F1 then F6 saves text if it was changed, then lets you switch to another file.
-
- F1 then Esc sets text to "not changed" to cancel automatic save.
- Ruler Line sets margins and tabs, and divides screen into two windows. Press
- F2 to see Ruler line and edit it. Enter any of:
- L sets left margin, for body of paragraph (wordwrap).
- P sets paragraph margin, for first line of paragraph (enter).
- R sets right margin, where wordwrap and reformatting occur.
- B sets ring-bell margin.
- T sets tab stop.
- D sets Decimal tab stop, for entering numbers in columns.
- [ and ] set temporary margins.
- All other characters are ignored. Shift End releases right margin.
-
- Press F2 to make Ruler line divide screen into windows. Up or down arrow
- moves to window for editing. F1 then F6 sequence reads another file into
- one window, so switching windows also switches files. In window, F2 moves
- cursor to Ruler line to switch windows. On Ruler line, F2 cancels window.
-
- When you start PC-Write, it tries to read Ruler from file "RULER.XYZ" where
- "xyz" is your file's extension; if none, it tries for "RULER.DEF". Press
- Ctrl F2 (Alt 2) to read ruler from file. First line of file has Ruler;
- rest has customization information about display attributes, printer fonts,
- and other options.
- To PC-Write, paragraph is one line of text, followed by additional lines of
- text which all have same left margin. First line can be indented or hanging.
-
- Press F7 to reformat paragraph (from cursor line to end, or in marked area)
- so it fits inside right margin. Reformatting does not affect left margin.
- Reformatting occurs in one of three modes: JustOff, Justify, or Un-Just.
- JustOff moves words between lines to fit but does not add or remove spaces.
- Justify adds or removes spaces to get right side even at right margin.
- Un-just is like JustOff, but removes any extra spaces added by Justify.
- Mode is on top line. Press Shift F7 (Alt 7) to change it.
-
- Press F8 to change case of letter between upper and lower. With marking or
- marked text, all of it has case changed.
-
- Press Shift F8 (Alt 8) to center line between left and right margins. With
- marking or marked text, all is centered.
-
- Ctrl Space inserts Hard-Space, and Ctrl \ inserts Hard-Hyphen. Use them where
- reformat should not break a line. Ctrl hyphen inserts Soft-Hyphen; use in a
- word where reformat can break a line. Ctrl P inserts Hard-Break; use where
- you want new page. All are translated by the page printer program, PR.
- Appearance of text printed by PR program is set with dot commands and fonts.
- Dot commands are on separate lines. Fonts are special characters entered in
- line with Alt and letter. Alt space makes fonts are visible or hidden.
